All Things Books!
I just want to start off by saying that I have so many feelings about this book. I stayed up late for two nights and ignored my responsibilities because I just had to finish this book. 10/10 recommend this book, it is amazing and I'm sad I have to wait till November 2021 to read the next book! Also spoilers below!
I really have to applaud Sarah for preparing me that characters were going to die but still making me get attached to them and have them die a horrific death. I literally bawled my eyes out after the first part of the book.
If you didn't know this is Sarah J Mass’s first adult book. I really didn't see much change except that she used the “F” word like on every page. The main characters had a few steam makeout sessions but there were more NSFW scenes in her YA books. I know this will change in the next books in the series but I really like how these characters were closer to my age and I felt like I could relate to the characters more because the series is based in the future so they have a few more similarities in terms of technology and similar likes! Bryce also is described as having a similar body type to me rather than being a stick. We also love a main character with daddy issues, now that's where I can relate lol.
I saw on tumblr that the different books in the book are names after the first 4 circles of Hel. I really just have to appreciate that Sarah has thought of every single little detail.
I could not put this book down and even though the first few chapters have a lot of information for you, I love this world and the way it is explained to us. Sarah is also good at giving hints that something will be important if you pay attention. I knew that the tattoo was going to mean something when it kept coming up.
Some key characteristics of this book is the main reason that I loved this book. At its very core this book is about friendship. The love that Bryce has for Danika that continues to help push her forward and get justice for her and her pack's death. The unconditionally love that they shared in their friendship is something I can relate to and it gives the book so much more meaning. I also think that the amount of romance in the book is the right amount. I am such a stan for the enemies to lovers trope but i think Sarah hit the nail on the head. The make out sessions were great but the fact that Bryce and Hunt didn't get to sleep together in this book tells me that this really is not their story finale. Sarah leaves us wanting more but at this book's core is friendship, both Bryce and Danika’s and Bryce and Hunts.
I cannot recommend this book enough. I love it and I am looking forward to reading the next book when it is rumored to be released in November of next year. It feels so weird to start a series with Sarah. By the time that i had discover Throne of Glass, Tower of Dawn had just been released and I only had to wait for Kingdom of Ash to be resled and the fandom all ready had so much material and when I read the A Court of Thorns and Roses Series the novella A Court of Frost and Starlight would come out in the upcoming May. I am very excited to be here on “day 1” with this series because I am also starting to be an adult and this feels like I am growing up too!
This year I rediscovered Cinder by Marissa Meyer. I remember picking up this when I was in high school and I read the first few pages and I thought a robot retelling of Cinderella was so stupid and I put the book back on the shelf. But then a few weeks ago on my Instagram, drawings and Tumblr posts started popping up on my feed and it looked so interesting. So, I picked the book back up and I LOVED it!
I finished the book in one day, while procrastinating my homework! I actually loved the twist that Marissa Myer put this retelling of Cinderellla. I thought that Cinder was really quirky, and it was great to see that she was a smart. When she meets Kai in her shop is was so great to see a realistic teenage girl meets boy. I also really loved that Cinder was friends with one of her step sisters. Peony was super likable and funny, I found it so interesting that her and Iko were so obsessed with Prince Kai. Iko was also an interesting character, for being a robot she was really funny, and I was really sad when the stepmoster destroyed her.
I definitely was expecting that Cinder would end up being a lab rat or that she would be immune to letomosis. Though I definitely had my suspicions that she was the missing Lunar princess. I was really sad when Peony died, I really thought she was going to make it. I was also really shocked by the power of Queen Levana.
I was really sad about the last 30 pages of the book. I really thought things would work out with Cinder went to the ball. I thought that Prince Kai would still accept Cinder, and she would save the day, and everything would be ok. But instead Cinder is on the run and she knows that she is the lost princess of Luna.
I really loved this book. if you haven’t read it then please think about giving this book a chance. If you have read this book, reread it. It will forever be a good book! 10/10 recommend!
I can’t believe another year is about to be over. Time passes so fast. It was a great year in books. A few of my favorite series ended and I discovered more amazing books! Some of the books on my list are stand alone and some are a part of a series I completed this year.
2. Frat Girl by Kiley Roache
Being in college and in a sorority, this book holds a special place on my bookshelf. There are not many books that are written in about sororities and fraternities. This one of the only contemporary books I read this year and it was a great book!
3. Crazy Rich Asians Trilogyby Kevin Kwan
Love, Love these books! There is so much drama and storylines. I was never bored reading these books! 10/10 Recommend!
4. Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
This series is probably the most surprising favorite of mine on this list. I had Illuminae on my bookshelf since it came out but I had never got past a few chapters, but this summer I picked it up and the books just spook to me. They are an amazing set of books!
5. A Court of Frost and Starlightby Sarah J Mass
I really love this book. I know that there are mixed reviews about this book, but it was everything I was expecting it to be. It was basically a fanfic about what happens between books. It was sweet and calm. It set up the next books she is writing. Overall a great read!
I loved this book more than I thought I would. Don’t get me wrong, anything endorsed by James Patterson is going to be an awesome book. It is one of the reasons the book caught my eye. That and the amazing cover!
Before I picked up this book, I had no idea that this was an LGBTQ+ book. I saw forbidden romance in the summary and I thought her and the king were going to fall in love. There were no hints in the summary or in the place I picked the book from at the bookstore. But once I finished the book, it was showing up all over my Instagram as a diversity book. I was definitely confused when Lei keep describing Wren in every scene they were in, I was thinking that Wren must be very beautiful for the author to keep bringing her up. I really loved the slow burn of Lei’s and Wren’s romance. It was so romantic that they tried to stay away from each other at first, the they were forced together, and they became friends. Then they fell in love!
The storytelling in this book was magical, I was hooked from the first chapter. I love that this book is not afraid to touch on difficult subjects, but that there is also mystery, intrigue, and comedy. I could not put this book down. I tried to get to stopping point, but I just keep turning the pages and I ended up reading this book in one day!
The Girls of Paper and Fire is probably one of the best books I have read this year! I definitely recommend this book!
Heir of Fire is the third installment in the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Mass. This book is wonderful. Especially after the slow pace of the book before it. Heir of Fire is on my top three favorite books of the series. It has so much action and adventure. I love when an author introduces new lands and new characters. Sarah has a real talent for world building and making sure all of her characters have a purpose and that they are relatable!
I really loved how this book picked up the pace after the slowness of the second book (which was my least favorite of the series).
I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the Manon chapters, but they got really interesting and I think she is going to be a favorite character. I get Red Ridding Hood vibes from her story. She is a real dynamic character and you can't help but like her.
I really love getting to see Aelin and Rowan train and interact. They make me smile and I know they are going to end up together. I love that they become really great friends and that Aelin frees Rowan from Mavae. These chapters gave me life, we got to see a sassy Aelin!
I recommend this series to all of you! They tell a great story!
I love this book. This is a great book. I tore through this book so fast, I was tempted to skip class to finish this book. 10/10 recommend for everyone to read. The movie version is taking over the world and reimaging the whole genre.
This story is a perfect culmination of romance, drama, extravagance, and family. It was so refreshing to read a romance novel that did not take place in the United States. Singapore is a lovely place and it offers lots of sightseeing, culture and food! Reading this book just made me want to take a trip soon to all the places mentioned.
I am a sucker for a good romance and family drama story line. It would be a boy to think that he didn’t need to prepare his girlfriend for his family. It’s probably the most lifelike thing in the book. it was interesting to see how the other half lives. I would love the chance to actually go into this book and see all of the wonderful places.
The drama is what really kept me entertained, because anyone can write a romance book but to combine it with this level of family drama is next level. Also, to be able to keep all these characters (and their backstory/ family line) straight this author is amazing and really put a lot of effort in to this wonderful story.
I really do not have anything bad to say about this story. In the end I think Nick made to right decision to follow Rachel back to New York and put her above is family. I actually like this ending better than what happened in the movie because happy endings take time. I hope the next books live up to this book.
All Will Burn!
This has to be my favorite book so far in the series. Kings Cage by Victoria Aveyard is the third book in the Red Queen quartet. This book is packed with romance, assassination attempts, new allies, and new enemies.
So much happens throughout the course of this book. For most of the book Mare is a prisoner of Maven. We get to see just how well Maven is running the country without the scheming of his mother. While I know I am supposed to hate Maven for all the horrible things he has done like; having Mare tortured, keeping Mare captive, and forcing her to say things to further his own agenda (and that’s just in this book). But I do feel sorry for Maven his mother was truly evil and to mess with a toddler’s mind, that really messes up the minds development and Maven was basically emotionally abused as a child. The fact that he no longer feels any emotion towards his father or brother is really sad and that he doesn’t know what is really real in his mind just hurts my heart. Victoria Aveyard really knows how to make a sympathetic villain.
I was right that Farley was pregnant and of course there are more people to meet on the Scarlet Guard front. I wonder if we will ever meet them all? I am a little sick of seeing new people in charge every time we see a point of view from over here. Also, not surprised that they cannot all agree on what to do. At least Cal had Nanny sent in to see if she could save Mare when the other were willing to let her try to escape by herself, condemn their organization and abandon anything Mare knew about.
I think if Maven was not such an evil person he would make a great ruler. If the side the reds saw on the coronation was the real Maven, the kingdom would be in good hands! He knows how to get the reds to agree with him, to get everyone to fear who he fears, and he seems compassionate. But he’s not and it’s all just a show. I’m not sure why I was surprised that the war that has been going since forever is a ploy to control population in reds, but it is a genius, well thought out idea to have lasted this long. And it is only ending so that Maven will have more allies in his war.
My absolute favorite character in this book is Evangeline! She knows that Maven is full of it and is ready to stir up drama. While she would love to have a crown she definitely doesn’t want to marry the crazy brother plus she’s in love with someone else. So glad that she is the one to free Mare and that she got to experience a title and happiness with Elane for a short while until Cal’s scheming grandmas had to ruin it by promising a union between them.
The last battle scene was epic. There was so much going on and so many different people working together. Victoria really outdid herself in her writing here. Towards the middle of the battle I did not think our side would win as it was getting really close but then we learn Cal’s grandmother’s reinforcements get there, the Lakelander king dies and they win the battle!
Once Cal and Mare reunite I finally got to see the relationship I had been hoping for. They were doing so great. They seemed so happy and content. They were talking, training, and doing other couple things. So of course, since the main characters experience a little bit of happiness something had to ruin it. Though Mare should have expected that some silvers would want Cal to be back on the throne, she saw some on them die at Maven’s hand, I think she over reacted. I can’t blame Cal for still accepting his throne back, it’s all he has known, it was what he was raided to do, and I think that this experience has changed him and would have changed to way he will rule his kingdom. I feel like mare did not give herself enough time to react to Cal getting his title back and she made a rash decision to leave him. While Cals grandmother and Evangeline’s father agreed to a marriage they could have figured out a way around that and Cal and Mare could have been together.
All in all, I loved this book. I devoured it! As long as you can get through the second book this book will not disappoint. Do not make the same mistake as me and stop before this book! Happy Reading!!
Kneel or Bleed!
What a book! The Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard is the second book in the Red Queen Quartet. The first half of the book was a bit slow for my taste, but I loved the last half of the book.
I was definitely not expecting the Scarlet Guard to have allies from different countries. I was also surprised that the new colonel was Farley’s father. I was happy the Mare got to be back with her family again and that they were all alive! Mare or I do not like this new command and I’m glad that she is trying to do right by Cal by trying to help him and give him information. I was so ready to hate Kilorn for betraying mare and getting her put in the cage, but the Scarlet Guard always has a plan! And then they escape on a plane and are on the look for newbloods!
The slow part of the book was before and when they look for the newbloods for me. I was not really in the mood to see them try to convince every single person to join their cause. So, I’m glad they only showed a few key ones. The dead baby scene literally broke my heart and made me hate Maven even more.
I am glad that Mare and Cal had each other to lean on but they still are keeping things from each other (like Maven’s creepy notes and whatever Call is hiding). I also have a sinking suspicion that Mare is going to end up alone, but I do not want that!! It is so cute that Shade and Farley were together, and she is definitely pregnant (she most certainly had morning sickness on the numerous plane trips.)
All of the newbloods had such cool powers and they were truly unique. It does kind of suck that that all of the newbloods are young and Mare is stuck in a lose lose situation by sending kids to war if she doesn’t submit to maven or if she goes against Maven with the newbloods.
The prison break chapters can only be descried as chaos. Everything happened so quickly. I am wondering what the Queen was doing in the basement though since it has yet to be said (it was probably something bad TBH). I do kind of feel like she died to easily like I know Mae is powerful, but she did not put up that much of a fight. Also, Cal and Farley were so harsh on Mare after the battle. I know that Farley lost a boyfriend, so she can feel just as much as Mare, but they did not have to fight plus Farley is one of the ones who put Mare down this path. (Though that future seeing guy Jon can go to the grave for all I care for not telling Mare.) but Cal needs to grow up, he needs to realize that they are at war whether he is going to choose a side or not and if people pose a danger to the mission they are going to have to go. He should know this more that anyone because he is trained in the art of war and he knows the cost of every battle. Cal and Mare need to make up, but we do not get to see if this do in this book.
They killed Shade!! When his funeral happened, it was heartbreaking, and the book could have ended right there because it was so sorrowful. And of course, at the funeral Mare is alone again, I know she shuts herself off from everybody, but she just lost her brother, and no one is really comforting her; Cal is mad at her, Kilorn thinks she wants to be alone, and her family are comforting each other.
Though the book did not end here, and Mare is going back into battle to finally save the Little Legion and do something actually good. I am glad that Mare is finally seeing people’s true motives and does not let these newcomers use her as a puppet in exchange for safe living for everyone else. Mare is off, and everyone is ready, they have a good, solid plan, so of course Maven has to ruin it. And back to the castle Mare goes. It was very cruel and heartbreaking to have mare be paraded by all the silvers, especially the ones who had family members who she had a hand in their death. The ending of this book was so bad in a good way. I sort of figured that she would end up back in Maven’s clutches because of those notes but that she had to face everything she had done, and everyone had to watch her break, it was just so sad!
I loved this book once all the action got rolling so if you get stuck in the middle of reading this book just hang in there because it gets better and you will not regret it.
I am in love with the Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. The story is beautifully crafted. It flows well, and the action and storytelling happen at just the right pace. The characters have a way of being loveable and also being not wanted. I basically finished this book in one sitting and I have no regrets. The story was so compelling, and I could not put it down!
Mare Barrow… what can I say about her. I think that she is a jack of all trades and not your average YA heroine. Her “occupation” is a thief and she is focused on her future on the war front because she has no real job. She ends up ruining her sisters chance at a lifelong career and support for her family. She takes being the black sheep of the family to a whole new level. And while you want to feel sorry for you she doesn’t not want anyone’s pity. Mare is also a kick butt, hard core character. She was ready to join a rebellion to save her best friend when he was going to end up in the war. I think that this is true courage to save someone and put someone else before yourself. She is a true example of character evolution. Though she might be too trusting.
I was literally blown away from the world building in this story. The amount of characters and colors and houses and powers. It got confusing for me at times and I cannot imagine trying to write about all of them. Victoria’s writing is just overall acceptable.
I was totally mind blow by the plot twist at the end. First, I for real thought that Cal would pick Mare and I was sad that my potential OTP was going up in flames and then my heart literally shattered when Mare was betrayed by Maven. I had to put the book down and take a few deep breaths. The queens and Mavens plan was so well thought out and planned though and by that I was impressed how if you go back you could see where the plan was being laid by the two. But it also made me think that maven could also be a victim because his mother is evil and could have manipulated him form a young age to be this way.
I was happy that Cal and Mare fought so well in the Bowl of Bones and then had help to escape from the Scarlet Guard. I was so glad that Mare got her favorite brother back and that they had they special powers to bond over.
The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyardis a great book. It is full of action, betrayals, romance, secret rendezvous, secrets, and powers. I totally recommend this book! It is a mix of the Hunger Games, The selection, and Divergent!
An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahiris an amazing book. I cannot tell you enough praises for this book. I’m actually sad that I did not discover this book sooner. This book was a definite cover buy though, the new updated covers are beautiful, they are simple, but beautiful and they show you the characters. I looked up the first cover and I would have never picked up the book because the cover was not interesting. Once I started this book, I could not put it down and that is because it is finals season and I should have been studying (its fine, I’ll pass.)
I just adore Laia. She is not your average heroine and that’s why I like her. She runs away when her only remaining family member is in danger and she is on the run till she can find someone that will help her. She constantly talks about how scared she is when she is in these dangerous situations. and as the story goes on she becomes able to use her fear to push through and accomplish her tasks.
I loved getting to see Laia and Elias’s point of view, but I did not like when we saw other characters point of view. I felt it took away from the story and was not necessary.
I really liked to love story between Laia and Elias. I really didn’t like the rebel group, I knew they were shady and not to be trusted from the very beginning.
Everyone should try to read this book; the beginning might be a little slow but the story picks up and will be hard to put down. I just loved this book and can’t wait to read the next one!
